Simons brothers win Two-Man Tourney
Wednesday, July 23, 2008
Brothers Brett and Scott Simons of Chadron jumped out to a one-stroke lead during the first round at the annual Two-Man Tournament at Ridgeview Country Club and led the rest of the way to win the championship flight last weekend.
The winners shot a 62 on Saturday and a 63 on Sunday for a 125 total to hold off Judd Hageman of Chadron and Pete Marak of Lusk, who fired a pair of 63s.
As the scores indicate, the competition was close. The Simonses went up by two strokes rather early in Sunday’s final round. But after Marak hit a pair of long approach shots, Hageman sank about a 20-foot putt on No. 16 to give the challengers an eagle and cut the deficit to a single stroke.
The Simons brothers got the stroke back on the next hole, when Brett’s long drive landed on the fringe of the green and Scott hit a well-placed chip shot to set up a putt for a birdie.
Hageman and Marak birdied the final hole to cut the lead back to a stroke while the Simonses played it safe and settled for a par, good enough for the victory.
The Simons brothers also won the tournament in 2005 with a 127 total. The next year, Hageman and Marak set the tourney record with a 121, one stroke ahead of Brett and Scott.
Hageman and Marak also were the 2002 champs with a 126 total.
Third in this year’s championship flight were the father and son duo of Dale and Jake Williamson of Chadron with a 128. The elder Williamson has been a member of the championship duo six times.
Another dad, John Heiser of Chadron, and his son, Chris Heiser of Rushville, won the first flight by shooting a 135, one stroke ahead of Darren Drabbels and Derek Ginn, both of Hay Springs, and Beau Miskimins and John Ritzen, both of Chadron.
The latter duo improved by 14 strokes from a year ago, when they won the third flight with a 150 total.
