Brodrick urges action
By KERRI REMPP, Record staff writer Tuesday, August 26, 2008
Recently found not guilty on several counts of sexual assault of a child, Jim Brodrick approached the Dawes County commissioners last week, encouraging action on several issues.
He filed a Freedom of Information request for numerous bills presented to the county detailing the costs of the case against him, and asked the county to pay for his legal bills, saying the case should have been dropped from the start.
Chairman Don Blausey informed Brodrick that the county pays only for public defenders, a service which was not utilized in this case, and assured him that all of his Freedom of Information requests will be fulfilled.
“Anything the county is responsible for we will certainly get to you,” Blausey said.
Brodrick also urged the commissioners to take disciplinary action against District Court Clerk Sharon Harrison, who admitted under oath to discussing the case with co-workers and customers while in the capacity of court clerk.
“We don’t condone that, if in fact it did occur,” Blausey said. However, because Harrison is an elected official, the commissioners have little authority over her except where budget matters are concerned.
Blausey also advised Brodrick of alternative options, including seeking a recall election of Harrison, contacting the Nebraska State Patrol, the Attorney General’s office and the State Bar Association regarding alleged improprieties in the case.
“I’m certainly not encouraging you to do anything,” Blausey said. “I’m just giving you some options. Unfortunately there’s just very little we as a board can do.”
Brodrick said he has already contacted the Internal Affairs division of the Nebraska State Patrol and the Attorney General’s office.
