Children invited to join Treblemakers at CSC

Children in the Chadron area will soon have another opportunity to advance their musical talents.
Dr. Una Taylor, Chadron State College assistant professor of choral and vocal studies, is inviting children in grades one through six to join the Treblemakers, the new singing group she is organizing this fall. The choir’s organizational meeting will be Thursday, Aug. 28, at 4 p.m. in room 104 of Memorial Hall.
Taylor said the idea of forming a children’s choir came to her while recently taking a course about the teaching methods named after Zoltan Kodaly (pronounced Ko-die), a 20th century composer and educator who lived in Hungary. Kodaly believed that music literacy is the right of every human being, not just the musically gifted. True to that philosophy, Taylor’s goal is to instill adoration for choral singing that the children will carry the rest of their lives.
“I’ve very much enjoyed learning the Kodaly Method. It’s a fabulous way to teach music,” she said. “Working with children is a lot of fun and hearing children sing is pretty special.”
Taylor said the choir also will provide “lab” experience for CSC students who are looking to fulfill the requirements of their elementary music methods course. She also looks forward to having the Treblemakers perform with the Chadron Community Choir.
