CSC students presenting ‘Reckless’ this week

Thirteen students have been cast in the Chadron State College Theatre Department’s production of “Reckless,” which opens this week in the Black Box Theatre of Memorial Hall.

“Reckless” is a dark comedy that was written by American playwright Craig Lucas in 1983 and made into a movie in 1995. A New York Times reviewer compared it to “It’s a Wonderful Life” and described it as a bittersweet Christmas fable.

The play is directed by Roger Mays, head of the theatre department. The set and lighting was designed by faculty member Scott Cavin.

Show times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. The play is recommended for only “mature audiences” because of its content.

Erika DeBoer of Morrill plays the part of Rachel, the story’s central figure. Other cast members (Name, hometown, role): Rhett Breedlove, Torrington, Wyo., Tim Timko; Brad Buckles, Cheyenne, Wyo., television announcer and derelict; John T. Bryan III, Denver, Colo., Roy and derelict; Mark Czup, Minatare, talk show host; Danielle Dull, Buffalo, Wyo., talk show guest; Chris Gibson, Aurora, Colo., doctor; Jesse Hamer, Box Elder, S.D., Tom; Shalee Jones, Scottsbluff, receptionist; Erin Neal, Crawford, Trish; Colton Neidhardt, Crawford, Lloyd; Amber Nightingale, Morrill, hospital patient; Amanda Pintore, Omaha, Pooty.

Neidhardt, a junior at CSC is a 2006 graduate of Crawford High School.

“The most challenging aspect of this show is how we bounce around in time and space,” said Neidhardt. “Many of the scenes are only a page long, and some scenes are as short as five lines. An entire year can pass over the course of five pages of dialogue. This can be challenging at times, especially in terms of character development, because as an actor you cannot be certain of everything that has happened to this character throughout the course of the show, as you can with most plays.”

Other area students involved in the production include:

Falon Fox, Rushville, set construction; Tracy Witt, Crawford, stage hand; Brianna Young, Gordon, set construction.

Seating in the Black Box is limited, so people are being encouraged to reserve tickets in advance by contacting the CSC box office at 432-6360 or boxoffice@csc.edu.
