Eagles split games in Adams State Classic

Chadron State’s young men’s basketball team continued to show promise while splitting a pair of games last weekend at the Adams State Bankers Classic in Alamosa.

Senior-laden Cal State ñDominguez Hills built a 43-31 halftime lead and then held off a serious challenge by the Eagles to win 79-75 in the opening round Friday afternoon. The next day, the Eagles easily defeated Colorado College 82-61 and are now 2-1 for the season.

Chadron State led 25-18 with 11 minutes left in the first half against Dominguez Hills, but was outscored 25-6 during the remainder of the half. During that period, the Eagles missed all nine of their field goal attempts, seven of them 3-point tries, and turned the ball over eight times. All six of their points before halftime came on free throws.

But the Eagles got back on track in the second half, cut the difference to five points in less than four minutes and nipped at the heels of the Toros throughout the second half. But CSC could never completely catch up.

The Eagles trailed by just a single point--66-65--with six minutes to play and were down by just 78-75 with 49 seconds to play. However, Dominguez Hills maintained possession the rest of the way, and added a free throw with four seconds remaining.

Sophomore Tim McLaurin led the Eagles with 32 points, matching the career high that he established last year. He was nine of 18 from the field and sank all 10 of his free throws. Freshman Kevin McClelland added 11 points and senior Marco DeSouza nine to go with a career-high and game-high 11 rebounds.

The Toros, who blasted Alaska-Fairbanks 98-62 in their opener this season and defeated Adams State 83-58 in their second game in the Bankers Classic, were paced by Jonathan Toliver with 17 points. Rodney Yearby added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Both are 6-foot-5 seniors. A 6-2 senior, Michael Hernandez, contributed 13 points.

The Eagles shot 44 percent from the field and were 17 of 19 from the free throw line. The Toros made 42 percent from the field. They sank just 19 of 40 free throws, but still outscored the Eagles from the line.

In the Saturday game, Chadron State bolted to a 45-24 halftime lead and then coasted to the 82-61 victory over Colorado College.

The Eagles shot 58.6 percent from the field in the opening half and 52.7 percent for the game. All 11 Eagles scored and just one of them played more than 21 minutes.

Junior center Tyler Coffman sank all four of his field goal shots and all four of his free throws while leading the Eagles in scoring with 12 points. Coffman’s alternate at center, Moala Tautuaa, added 11 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

McLaurin, who tallied seven points and grabbed six rebounds against the Tigers, was named to the all-tournament team.

Brady Ohlsen, a sophomore forward, paced Colorado College with 16 points and eight rebounds. Three more starters also reached double figures for the Tigers, but the Eagles outscored Colorado College 43-9 off the bench.

Colorado College shot just 20.7 percent from the field in the first half and only 27.5 percent for the game. The Eagles won the rebounding battle 42-27.
