Werdel, Lemmon named to Nebraska's national rodeo team

Two Chadron cowgirls earned a spot on the Nebraska high school rodeo team headed to nationals in New Mexico later this month.

Kaycee Werdel and Shalee Lemmon secured their spots during state finals in Hastings over the weekend. Werdel qualified in breakaway, winning the reserve champion title in the event. Lemmon placed twice in poles and claimed the alternate spot on the national team in that event.

Werdel picked up second in the second go and third in the short go with times of 2.81 seconds and 3.8 seconds in breakaway roping. Lemmon finished second in both the first go and the short go in pole bending with times of 21.637 seconds and 21.352 seconds. Lemmon also finished fourth in the barrel racing during the short go with a time of 17.676 seconds.

Two other national qualifiers from the Panhandle have ties with Chadron and Chadron State College.

Shelby Winchell of Scottsbluff won the goat tying and also was fourth in barrel racing and will compete in both events at nationals. She is the granddaughter of former Chadron High and Chadron State football and basketball standout Ron Winchell. In addition, her mother, the former Shawna Phillips, is a Chadron State graduate and her maternal grandfather, the late Dick Phillips, was a member of the original CSC rodeo team in the 1950s.

Riley Pruitt of Gering, winner of the tie down roping, comes from a long line of rodeo standouts. His maternal grandfather, Don Meter of Minatare, was the national collegiate calf roping champion while he was attending Chadron State in 1956. His mother, Martee Meter Pruitt, was the Central Rocky Mountain Region barrel racing champion in 1979 while she was attending CSC. She also finished fifth in the event at the College National Finals Rodeo that year.

Pruitt’s father, Troy, was the PRCA calf roping champion in 1990 and finished among the top 20 in the national standings five more times, including 1993, when he was the runner-up.

Winchell will be a senior at Scottsbluff High and Pruitt will be a senior at Bayard High.

Three other area competitors also came home with top 10 finishes during the state finals but failed to qualify for nationals.

Cati Stanko, a freshman from Gordon, finished sixth in goat tying during the first go with a time of 10.79 seconds.

David and Danni Jo Hinman, siblings from Hay Springs, nabbed third place in the first go in team roping with a time of 16.1 seconds. They picked up eighth place in the second go with a time of 29.26 seconds.

Danni Jo also saw success in goat tying and breakaway. She finished seventh in goats in the second go with a time of 10.57 seconds and was fourth in the event during the short go with a time of 9.07 seconds. She finished seventh in breakaway in the short go with a time of 13.44 seconds.
