Juniors get second place in tournament last weekend

After winning their first two games, the First National Bank of North Platte Nationals Juniors took second place in the Junior Tournament in Sidney last weekend.

Ogallala, which scored eight of its runs with two outs, won the championship game 12-2.

Zach Lurz was Chadron’s starting pitcher. Tait Earney came on in relief.

Riley Stack tripled and Nate Abegglen and Austin Brown each doubled to lead Chadron’s hitting.

Assistant Coach Louie Brezina said the Nationals just “couldn’t seem to get a break.”

Head Coach Jake McLain is proud of the team. He said, “Our guys aren’t the biggest or the strongest in the field, but they fear no one.”

Friday, during the first game of the tournament, the Juniors beat Her-shey/Sutherland 12-2.

“Hershland” jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Chadron scored all the rest of the runs and won by 10-run rule. Brezina said Earney pitched well.

“I was pleased because we hadn’t been hitting the balls well, but by the opening day of this tournament, everyone was hitting well,” Brezina said.

The Juniors won their second game on Friday over Bayard 13-12.

Bayard scored 11 of its runs in the opening inning. Chadron used three pitchers before recording an out.

Still, Chadron won the game. In the bottom of the sixth, Trevor Hinn doubled again down the left field line and Abegglen got the hit to win the game.

“This was the best game we played. After the first inning, we really came together as a team.” Brezina said.

Sidney beat the Juniors 4-3 in Chadron’s home opener last Tuesday.

Kenny Swift Bird, Abegglen and Wyatt Blome each had singles and Brown belted a double.

Lurz and Earney shared the duties on the mound.

“Our defense was good and there weren’t that many mistakes. We are still struggling with offense and striking out and not getting too many hits,” McLain said.

The Juniors are to play the Scottsbluff Twin Cities Zephyrs at home tonight at 5 p.m. This weekend they will be competing in the Junior Tournament in Gering.
