CSC women at home Sunday

After a two-week break, the Chadron State College women’s basketball team will return to action on Sunday for a 2 o’clock matinee contest against Montana State-Billings in the Armstrong Building.
The Eagles opened their season against the Yellowjackets in Billings on Nov. 21. Montana State had a 34-22 halftime lead and won 74-63. Kayla Ryan, a 6-1 junior, led the Yellowjackets with 17 points. Callie Kautzmann, a 5-10 sophomore, added 13 points and collected a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Jackets have a 5-4 record entering tonight’s game with another team from Billings, Rocky Mountain College. They won their first four games, but have lost four of their last five. Included in the losses was a 73-64 setback at the University of Mary in Bismarck on Dec. 17. Mary downed the Eagles 75-65 three days later in Bismarck.
Ryan leads Montana State in scoring and rebounding. She is averaging 15.6 points and 9.7 rebounds. Sarah McNamee, a 5-9 junior, is averaging 12.7 points and Kautzmann is averaging 11.8 points to rank third on the team.
The Eagles are 1-9. Their only victory was by a 71-59 score over New Mexico Highlands in Chadron on Dec. 5. They have struggled offensively. They are shooting just 32.6 percent from the field and only 29.8 percent from 3-point range.
A year ago when they finished with an 11-16 record, their best in seven years, the Eagles shot 40 percent from the field, including 35.8 percent from behind the arc.
A bright spot for CSC has been transfer Kaitlin Petri, who is averaging 18.1 points, 7.4 rebounds and 5.3 assists. She has made 45 percent of her field goal tries.
Second on CSC’s scoring chart is senior guard Samantha Arkulari, who is averaging 9.5 points. Sophomore forward Kelsey Scott is next at 6.2 points a game.
Both Chadron State teams will return to Rocky Mountain Athletic Confer-ence action on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 8 and 9, when they will host Mesa State and Western State in double-headers.
Through Christmas, the Mesa State women were 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the conference. The Mavericks’ men were 10-1 for the season and 4-0 in the RMAC. Two of the men’s victories were by scores of 80-77 and 61-56 over perennial power Metro State, both at home.
The Mavericks’ only loss was a 76-66 decision to nationally-ranked Quincy University of Illinois on Dec. 20 at Quincy.
The Western State women entered the holidays at 4-7 overall and 2-2 in the conference. The Mountaineers’ men were 3-6 and 0-4.
The Chadron State men are 4-7 overall and 2-2 in the RMAC.
